Quick Tips

Join Now

Reciprocal rights (the ability to visit locations other than your “home gym”) may take a month or so to kick in. If you’re going travelling in a couple months, join now!

Use Free Trials

Most gyms offer 7-day trials – use them! If you’re only travelling some of the time, it doesn’t matter how many locations your franchise has around the country, your home gym needs to be a good one. Look out for its cleanliness, facilities, and traffic and different times.

Double-Check Locations

If you know where you’re going to be travelling, ensure that there are gyms in that location. For example, Jetts is a good all-round gym with plenty of locations, but at the time of writing this, they have none in South Australia.

Traveller’s Choice – Anytime Fitness

Anytime Fitness is our choice for serious travellers for 4 main reasons;

  • By far the most locations internationally, and second most within Australia
  • Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, at almost all locations
  • Showers! + usually a microwave, kettle, WiFi, etc.

Unless your travelling is confined to the capital cities, I believe that Anytime Fitness is the no-brainer.

Best Value – Planet Fitness

Starting at just $5/week with ~24hr access, showers, and WiFi, this quickly expanding franchise is by far the best value if they’re in the right locations for you. If you sign up to the $10/week Black Card membership, then you also get to bring a friend for free – by far the best deal if you’re travelling with a partner. I also liked that access was via a QR code, so you don’t need to worry about forgetting or losing an RFID key-fob.

Best Facilities – Goodlife

Goodlife is relatively expensive, and their gyms are currently concentrated on the East Coast, especially in Queensland. That being said, their facilities are some of the best in country – especially for women. Pools, saunas, mums and bubs classes, and even daycare in select locations. If you’re a travelling to Australia but plan to stay-put for an extended time, Goodlife is the luxury option.

How to get Anytime Fitness for cheap!

The thing to note about Anytime Fitness, unlike some other gyms, is that you can negotiate on price with most of the franchises. So, what I suggest you do (and what I did myself) is this:

Find an Anytime Fitness location nearby a Planet Fitness. Email that Anytime Fitness and explain that you’re already a Planet Fitness member, paying only $5/week (the basic membership) with no lock-in contract, key, or joining fee. Tell them that you’re willing to pay a specific amount, for a specific time period, with no joining fee.

For example, you might say “I’m willing to pay $736 ($13/week for 52 weeks + $60 key fee) upfront. Otherwise, it doesn’t make sense for me to move from Planet Fitness.”

If you were to sign-up at Anytime’s standard rate, you’d pay ~$1,036. This way, you’re essentially saving $300. (If this works for you and you want to say thanks, feel free to pay it forward with my Variety Foundation fundraiser for children in need).
