How To Use USB-C Earphones On A MacBook

I tried plugging my Pixel USB-C Earbuds into my Apple MacBook Air M1 today expecting to automatically hear the YouTube video I was listening to via the earphones, but instead the sound continued through the Mac’s speakers. Odd.

I did some Googling but it took longer than usual to find an answer, so here’s a post to make it easier for future Googlers, even thought it’s not my usual style.

Go to Apple Icon (top left) > System Preferences > Sound > Output

Select your USB-C earphones as the default speakers. If they disconnect, sound will automatically swap back to the speakers, and then back to the earphones when you plug them back in again.

Unfortunately, you will have to go through this process every time you plug in a new digital (usb-c) “speaker”, at least for now. Nonetheless, I absolutely love my USB-C earphones. If you want to pick up a pair of USB-C Earphones for yourself I recommend the Belkin Rockstars as a good mid-range option.
